TIMELINE

A region, a culture, a co-op

1954: The beginning of the Co-operative of Lanslebourg.

Production runs only from December to June, though Beaufort is still produced in mountain pastures during summer time

 

1965: a farmer’s union is formed- the UPB Union des Producteurs de Beaufort

 

1968: 1st AOC* decree: definition of the production area (Beaufort, Maurienne, Tarentaise) and production techniques

1971: Lanslebourg maturing cellar is built.

 

1975: Creation of the Syndicat de Défense du Beaufort union, created to develop Beaufort’s brand & promotion

 

1976: 2nd AOC decree: protecting the concave shape of the Beaufort

 

1986: 3rd AOC decree requiring using the milk of only 2 co2 breeds: Tarine and Abondance

 

1993: 4th AOC decree limiting milk production to 5 000kg/ cow/ year maximum

 

1994 : Development of the visitor circuit around the workshop

 

1996: Upgrade of the certification and requirements from AOC (French) to PDO Protected Designation of Origin (European) 

 

2002:

  • The very first robot installed in the cellar
  • The “Coopérative Haute-Maurienne Vanoise” is created, merging with the one located in Bonneval sur Arc (2001), the one in Aussois (1988) and the Lanslevillard’s one (1966). In 1991, the famers who were still delivering their milk during the summer to the Mont Cenis workshop began to deliver it down to Lanslebourg. In 2008, Bessans was the last independent cooperative to be integrated

 

2003: Milk can unloading & washing and cheese brining are automated

 

2009: The cellar is being renovated for automation ➜ capacity increases to 6,300 wheels.

 

2015: Creation of Savoie Lactée which turns whey into valuable co-products 

 

2015: A brand-new workshop is being built in Sollières for the production of Bleu de Bonneval sur Arc

 

2017: 1st tanker truck is purchased which gradually leads to the end of milk collection in cans

 

Today: our cooperative is always evolving to current and future challenges such as decarbonizing our production, agricultural resilience in the face of climate change, fluctuating consumption, etc.
